Pre-requisites:

  • A report available in Power BI Desktop.
  • It is possible to alter it in Service, but check the process, which follows the desktop process.

Power BI Desktop

The example report below is from Cash, but the method is the same regardless of the report type.

To rename a chart indicated below (1), select the chart you need to rename

  1. Select the Chart you want to rename.
  2. Select the Format in the Visualization Option.
  3. Expand the Title option.
  4. Change the text in the Text option.
  5. If that doesn’t update the Title, it may be necessary to Reset to default and try again.

Power BI Service

Although more likely to be done in Power BI Desktop, it is possible to perform the above steps in Power BI Service (Online), providing you have sufficient permissions assigned by the report / workspace owner.

As with Power BI Desktop, the process is the same regardless of report.

To check if you have permissions, look for the Edit option, indicated in the image below.

Click on it.

Note: If you don't see the option then you either need to request access or discuss the change with the report owner.

You should then be presented with something similar to the following

1. Once you see the Visualization panel, perform the steps as per the Power BI Desktop shown in the image above.

2a. Once you have made the changes, they will need saving to take affect.

2b. You will then need to exit Edit mode and return to the Reading view. This is regardless of if you need to save or not.

You can chose to discard any changes or save them (after clicking on Reading View) should changes have been made.

This concludes the quick to 'Change the Title of a Chart' in Power BI Desktop.
